Cannabinoid protocols

The clinic provides on-line add-on treatment with cannabinoids to patients with chronic metabolic diseases such as cancer, chronic pain, rheumatoid diseases, neurological diseases... Cannabinoid therapies are intended as add-on treatment to already prescribed conventional protocols.

We provide counsel also to a growing number of clients without diagnosis and prescribed pharmacological treatment that demand preventive cannabinoid protocols against stress, insomnia, chronic pain, seasonal infections, etc.

To provide individual counsel the scientific literature is checked when required. Generally the expression of cannabinoid receptors on the affected organs or tissues and their specificity is checked (CB1, CB2, TRP family of receptors). We then provide advice and opinion on the following:

- composition, doses and routes of administration of cannabinoids;

- advice to avoid influence of cannabinoids on other prescribed drugs or suplements (drug-drug interaction);

- indications/counter indications of cannabinoids according to the clinical status of the patient,

Extended Cannabinoid Protocols

When required we also advise holistic protocols that go beyond the application of just cannabinoids. We practice translational medicine, which means we can offer our clients treatments supported by the latest scientific findings. If required these individual protocols include study of accessible scientific literature to optimise the efficacy.

With cannabinoids and other natural substances, we perform chemosensitization in oncology patients. This means we are improving the effectiveness of chemotherapy drugs. In our blog you can read more about chemosensitization. (In Slovene language only.)

Providing second opinion

As an independent clinic, we provide expert opinion outside of the currently valid treatment doctrines. In accordance with the latest scientific findings and the most successful doctrines  known to us, we provide second opinion and propose complementary treatment in accordance with the opinion.

Active on-line monitoring of patients

For oncology patients active written supervision and counsel is provided. The essence is monitoring the progress and proactive intervention with a wider set of natural and pharmaceutical drugs available according to the medical science. This kind of proactive treatment aims to enhance conventional protocols, avoid delays and mistakes in treatments which are too often the case in over-burdened public medical systems. We offer proactive cooperation with treating oncologists or other specialists.

Pediatric neurological patients are offered counsel by prof. dr. David Neubauer, who is employed by The Pediatric Clinic of the University Mecial Centre of Ljubljana. He treats our patients pro bono.

Contact us

For assessment of a patients eligibility for cannabinoid treatment we need the following:

-Patient's history, i.e. description of problems and symptoms (anamnesis)

-Medical reports and findings that define the condition:

-list of drugs and supplements as well as body weight

-phone number of the patient or an authorized person/relative

The information should be sent to info@cannabinoid-clinic.com.

Cannabinoids in Western medicine

Cannabinoids have been gradually accepted in Western medicine for almost twenty years. Due to lack of systematic training the formal acceptance does not mean that doctors have been provided with all neccessary tools and knowledge to use them in daily clinical practice. As a result, many patients are deprived of the additional treatment options that are available to them in accordance with the law.

International Insitute for Cannabinoids ICANNA

The clinic is scientifically guided by the International Instiute for Cannabinoids ICANNA. ICANNA is a non-profit NGO, which was formed by the collaboration of partners from Slovenia, Germany and Austria. As an interdisciplinary organization, it brings together an array of experts, researchers and scientists from different countries.

The purpose of the institute is a multi-national cooperation in the field of cannabinoid research. The Institute achieves its goals through the implementation of research, development, analysis, education, training, consulting, monitoring, publishing, informing, raising awareness, proposing expert opinions or standpoints, offering expert advice and similar.

Tamara Lah Turnšek is a member of the ICANNA Institute. In the period from 1995 to 2018, she was the Director of the National Institute of Biology (NIB), where she continues to carry out her research as Programme Leader at the Department of Genetic Toxicology and Cancer Biology, which she established. She is also a consultant to the NIB Director. She started her research career at the Jožef Stefan Institute and soon focused on biomedicine and its application in the clinic. She became interested in this field already during her specialization in clinical biochemistry at the Paediatric Clinic in Ljubljana, and especially later, when she worked closely with the Clinic of Stomatology, the Institute of Oncology and the Clinic of Neurosurgery University Medical Clinics in Ljubljana.

In the meantime, she was a post-doctoral and later an Assistant Professor at the Department of Pharmacology at the Wayne State University, Medical School in Detroit and a visiting Professor and Head of Metastasis Research Department at the Albert Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, dedicating her entire research to cancer. She is professionally interested in the biology of tumours, and has recently been focusing in stem cells in cancer. The latter could be implemented in clinic, especially in the development and targeting of tumor biomarkers. On this issue she cooperated with pharmaceutical firms in Europe and the USA. She is a member of several international associations and lectures at congresses in different countries, along with her colleagues she has also organized several international meetings for example, a series of Conferences on Experimental and Translational Oncology – CETO since 2004. Due to the topicality of its field, her research program group collaborates with several international research in Europe and beyond.

Tamara has until recently acted as the President of the Science and Technology Council, which is the expert consulting body of the Government of the Republic of Slovenia. Her experiences as a member of the EU Helsinki Group for Women in Science also focused on the initiative to set up “National Committee for Promoting Equal Opportunities for Women in Science", which she chaired for several years. Until recently she was a full time Professor at the Biotechnical Faculty and Faculty of Chemistry and Chemical Technology, University of Ljubljana. She was a member of the Advisory Body at the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts (SAZU) on ethics in science, and was in the period 2014-2019 chairing the Committee for National Prize for Science Awards, named Zois and Puh's Awards. Since 2016 she has also been a member of the Academy of Engineering of Slovenia (IAS).

She is currently also investigating the effectiveness of cannabinoids preparations for treatment of cancer, developing a platform for the individualized treatment of glioblastomas with natural substances, including hemp. She is emphasizing that various obstacles to research in this field need to be eliminated and would encourage all incentives to carry out pre-clinical and clinical research on medical cannabis. She is supporting the initiatives for regulation of the access to cannabis, i.e. its preparations for medical purposes. In this context, she stresses the importance of educating doctors, professionals, students and of course the public on recent scientific endeavours in the field.

Tamara Lah Turnšek graduated from the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Technology of the University of Ljubljana, followed by obtaining her master's degree and PhD in biochemistry from the Faculty of Chemistry and Chemical Technology of the University of Ljubljana.
